Reasons not to code with LLMs

Note

Don't read into this article as if I'm using LLMs or not. But I think everyone should be aware of the downsides of relying too much on LLMs and then decide if, or to what degree, they should be used.

  • It's less fun.
  • You will have less expertise about how your application works.
  • You will not get the best solution, but the most common one.
  • It's trained on stolen data.
  • It's bad for the environment.
  • It costs money.
  • It is likely to become more expensive.
  • LLM-generated code will deteriorate over time.
  • You are subsidizing businesses that have a 10% chance of wiping out the human race.
